The toolbar runs down the left of the window. Each slot holds one tool or a group of related ones; press and hold a slot to open its flyout and pick another tool from the group. A tool's shortcut is a single key press, and it works whenever you are not typing into text or a field.
The shortcuts below are written in the macOS form. On Windows, read ⌥ as Alt, ⌘ as Ctrl and ⇧ as Shift.
Three habits apply to nearly every tool:
Hold the space bar to borrow the Hand tool, and let go to return to what you were using.
Hold ⌘ to borrow the Selection tool in the same way. The Free Transform tool is the exception: it reads ⌘ itself.
Esc abandons a drag or a path you are part way through drawing, leaving the artwork as it was.
A few slots are listed for completeness but have no behaviour behind them yet. The toolbar marks those as coming soon and the engine refuses them.
Selection
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Selection Tool
V
Click an object to select it whole, ⇧-click to add or remove one, and drag across empty canvas for a marquee. Drag inside the selection to move it, with ⇧ holding the move to 45° steps and ⌥ leaving a copy behind.
With an object selected, the bounding box carries eight handles. Drag a handle to scale, holding ⇧ to keep the proportions and ⌥ to scale about the centre; drag just outside a corner to rotate, with ⇧ snapping to 45°. Double-click steps into a group and works inside it, double-click text to edit it, double-click a symbol instance to edit the symbol every instance draws, and double-click away from the artwork to step back out.
Live shapes carry their own widgets: drag a corner widget to round every corner of the shape at once, or ⌥-click it to step the corner on to the next kind.
Direct Selection and Group Selection
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Direct Selection Tool
A
Click an anchor, a handle or a segment, and drag it to reshape the path; a marquee over empty canvas picks up the anchors inside it. ⇧ adds to what is picked and holds a drag to 45°, and ⌥ while dragging a handle breaks the pair so the anchor becomes a corner.
Group Selection Tool
–
Click an object to select it; click it again to take in the group it belongs to, and again for the group above that.
The Direct Selection tool also drags the crossings of an envelope's mesh, bending what the envelope holds, and it rounds one corner of a live shape at a time rather than all of them.
Magic Wand
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Magic Wand Tool
Y
Click an object to select every object painted like it. What counts as alike - fill, stroke, stroke weight, opacity, blending mode - is set in the Magic Wand panel, and ⇧ adds the new matches to the selection.
Lasso
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Lasso Tool
Q
Drag a freeform loop to select the anchors inside it. ⇧ adds them to the anchors already picked.
The pen family
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Pen Tool
P
Click to drop a corner point, or press and drag to pull smooth handles out of it; click the first anchor to close the path. ⇧ holds the new point or the handle to 45°, and ⌥ while dragging breaks the handles so the path leaves the anchor at its own angle.
Add Anchor Point Tool
+
Click a segment to add an anchor there, without changing the shape of the path.
Delete Anchor Point Tool
−
Click an anchor to take it out, joining the segments either side of it.
Anchor Point Tool
⇧C
Drag an anchor to pull a matched pair of handles out of it, or click it to pull the handles back in and leave a corner. Drag one handle on its own to move that side alone; ⇧ holds it to 45°.
While the Pen tool has a path on the go, Enter or Esc finishes it and Backspace takes back the last anchor.
Curvature
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Curvature Tool
⇧~
Click to drop points and a smooth curve is fitted through them; ⌥-click drops a corner point instead. Drag a point to move it, double-click a point to switch it between smooth and corner, click the first point to close the path, and double-click away from it to finish.
Type
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Type Tool
T
Click for point type, drag out a box for area type, and click existing text to edit it. Clicking an open path sets the type running along that path.
Area Type Tool
–
Drag out the box the type flows inside.
Type on a Path Tool
–
Click a path and the type runs along it. The path becomes the baseline, so it stops being artwork in its own right.
Vertical Type Tool
–
The same as the Type tool, except the line of type runs down the page rather than across it.
Touch Type Tool
⇧T
Click a character to pick it out of its line, then drag it to move it, drag a corner knob to resize it or the knob above it to turn it. ⇧ keeps a corner resize proportional and snaps the turn to 11.25° steps, and Delete puts the character back where the text set it.
The side knobs of the Touch Type box stretch the character one way only: across for width, along for height.
Lines, arcs, spirals and grids
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Line Segment Tool
\
Drag to draw a straight line. ⇧ holds it to 45° steps and ⌥ draws it out from its middle rather than its end.
Arc Tool
–
Drag out the box the arc fills; ⇧ squares that box off. The arrow keys bend the arc flatter or fuller, C closes and opens it, and F or X flips which way it bows.
Spiral Tool
–
Drag out from the centre: the distance sets the radius and the direction sets where the spiral starts. ⌥ reverses the winding, R reverses it for good, and the arrow keys add and remove segments.
Rectangular Grid Tool
–
Drag out the grid, with ⌥ drawing from the centre and ⇧ keeping it square. The up and down arrows change the number of rows, left and right the columns.
Polar Grid Tool
–
Drag out the grid, with ⌥ drawing from the centre and ⇧ keeping it round. The up and down arrows change the concentric rings, left and right the radial spokes.
The two grid tools make one path per line, so every line stays selectable on its own.
Rectangles, ellipses and other shapes
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Rectangle Tool
M
Drag to draw a rectangle. ⇧ keeps it square and ⌥ draws it out from its centre.
Rounded Rectangle Tool
–
The same drag, with rounded corners; the up and down arrows grow and shrink the corner radius as you draw.
Ellipse Tool
L
Drag to draw an ellipse, with ⇧ for a circle and ⌥ to draw from the centre.
Polygon Tool
–
Drag out from the centre; the direction of the drag turns the polygon, and ⇧ keeps it upright. The arrow keys add and remove sides.
Star Tool
–
Drag out from the centre, turning the star as you go, with ⇧ holding it upright. The arrow keys add and remove points.
Flare Tool
–
Drag once to set the centre and size of the flare's halo, then drag a second time to string its rings across the artwork. While you drag, the left and right arrows change the number of rings and the up and down arrows the number of rays.
A click rather than a drag with any of these tools opens a dialog, so you can give the shape exact measurements instead. The Flare tool answers a click with a flare the size its options ask for.
Brushes
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Paintbrush Tool
B
Drag to draw freehand; the stroke is smoothed as it is fitted to curves, and it keeps the current brush and stroke.
Blob Brush Tool
⇧B
Draws the same stroke, but outlines it into a filled shape and merges it with any artwork it touches that shares its fill.
[ and ] make the brush smaller and larger.
Pencil and the path menders
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Shaper Tool
⇧N
Draw roughly and the stroke becomes the crisp shape you meant. Scribbling over artwork punches out what the scribble covers instead.
Pencil Tool
N
Draw freehand and the stroke is fitted to smooth curves. Hold ⌥ as you let go to close the path, which also happens on its own if you finish close to where you started.
Smooth Tool
–
Brush along a path to even out its handles and drop the anchors that barely bend it; a bigger brush smooths harder.
Path Eraser Tool
–
Brush along a path to rub out the part you cover.
Join Tool
–
Brush across two loose ends to join them into one path.
[ and ] resize the Smooth, Path Eraser and Join brushes. With artwork selected these three work on the selection alone; with nothing selected they work on any path they reach.
Erasing and cutting
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Eraser Tool
⇧E
Drag a round brush to subtract from objects. With a selection only the selected objects are erased; otherwise every unlocked path is, and [ and ] resize the brush.
Scissors Tool
C
Click a segment or an anchor to cut the path there. A closed path opens at the cut; an open path splits into two objects.
Knife
–
Drag across objects to slice them into separate pieces. ⌥ cuts in a straight line and ⇧ holds that line to 45° steps.
Rotate and Reflect
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Rotate Tool
R
Drag around the reference point to turn the selection, with ⇧ snapping to 45° and ⌥ turning a copy and leaving the original. ⌥-click puts the reference point where you clicked and opens the Rotate dialog.
Reflect Tool
O
Drag to swing the mirror axis through the reference point, with ⇧ snapping it to 45°. ⌥-click sets the reference point and opens the Reflect dialog, and ⌥ while dragging mirrors a copy.
Both tools start from the middle of the selection, and choosing something else puts the reference point back there.
Scale, Shear and Reshape
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Scale Tool
S
Drag away from the reference point to grow the selection and towards it to shrink it; ⇧ keeps the proportions and ⌥ scales a copy. ⌥-click sets the reference point and opens the Scale dialog.
Shear Tool
–
Drag to slant the selection about the reference point; ⇧ settles the slant on whichever axis your drag leans towards. ⌥-click sets the reference point and opens the Shear dialog.
Reshape Tool
–
Listed in the toolbar but not implemented yet; the palette marks it as coming soon.
With individual anchors selected, these tools transform those anchors rather than whole objects.
Width and the liquify brushes
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Width Tool
⇧W
Drag away from a stroked path to widen it there and towards the path to narrow it, leaving a width point behind. With nothing selected it works on any editable path.
Warp Tool
⇧R
Hold and drag a round brush to push the paths under it along with the pointer.
Twirl Tool
–
Hold the brush over artwork and it keeps winding for as long as you hold it.
Pucker Tool
–
Draws the paths under the brush in towards its centre.
Bloat Tool
–
Pushes the paths under the brush out from its centre.
Scallop Tool
–
Adds curved scallops to the paths under the brush.
Crystallize Tool
–
Adds spiked points to the paths under the brush.
Wrinkle Tool
–
Ripples the paths under the brush.
All seven liquify brushes take [ and ] for size, and ⇧ with those same keys - { and } - for how hard they push.
Free Transform and Puppet Warp
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Free Transform Tool
E
One box that scales, turns, shears and distorts the selection. Drag an edge or corner handle to scale, hold ⌘ on an edge handle to shear, drag inside the box to move it, and drag just outside a corner to turn it.
Puppet Warp Tool
–
Click the selected artwork to drop a pin, then drag the pins to bend it; the artwork keeps its shape around the pins that stay put. ⌥-click a pin removes it, ⇧-click picks up several, and ⌥-drag just outside a pin turns the artwork about it.
Free Transform scales and turns about its reference point, which you can drag anywhere, even outside the box; drop it near one of the box's nine usual places and it settles there. While scaling, ⇧ keeps the proportions and ⌥ scales about the centre rather than the reference point; while turning, ⇧ snaps to 45°. On a corner handle, ⌘ distorts that corner on its own and ⌘⌥⇧ distorts in perspective, with the neighbouring corner mirroring the drag; the widget beside the box sets the same two modes and the constrain switch. Changing a modifier part way through a drag switches at once, without letting go.
Puppet Warp reads Delete as removing the selected pins rather than the artwork, and ⌘A as selecting every pin. Each drag is one step to undo, and undo brings the pins back with the artwork they went with. Type, images and symbol instances cannot be distorted, and are left as they are.
Shape Builder and Live Paint
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Shape Builder Tool
⇧M
With overlapping shapes selected, drag across the regions you want joined and they become one object. ⌥-drag deletes the regions you cross instead.
Live Paint Bucket
K
Click a face of a Live Paint group to fill it with the current paint; ⌥-click picks up the paint already there instead of laying any down. The face under the pointer is outlined before you click.
Live Paint Selection Tool
⇧L
Click a face of a Live Paint group to select it, without painting it.
Perspective
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Perspective Grid Tool
⇧P
Shows the grid and shapes it: drag the vanishing points, drag one of them up or down to move the horizon, and drag the grid's near corner. 1 to 4, or the widget on screen, pick the plane you draw on.
Perspective Selection Tool
⇧V
Select artwork and drag it along its plane. Artwork that is not on the grid yet is set down on the active plane where you drag it.
While the grid is showing, the Rectangle, Rounded Rectangle, Ellipse and Rectangular Grid tools draw onto the active plane rather than flat, and 1 to 4 pick the plane from those tools too.
Mesh
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Mesh Tool
U
Click inside an object to run a mesh line each way through that spot, turning a plain path into a mesh. Click a mesh point to pick it and give it a colour from the Color panel, drag a point to move it, and ⌥-click one to take away the lines through it.
Gradient
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Gradient Tool
G
Drag across the selection to set the axis of its active paint, with ⇧ holding the axis to 45° steps. Over artwork that already has a gradient, work the annotator instead.
On the annotator, drag a stop along the axis to move it, drag a diamond to shift the blend between two stops, click the axis to add a stop in the colour it already is there, and pull a stop well off the axis to throw it away, as long as two are left. Delete removes the stop you last touched. On a freeform gradient the tool works in colour points instead: click the artwork to add one in the fill colour, and drag a point to move it.
Eyedropper and Measure
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Eyedropper Tool
I
Click an object to sample its whole appearance onto the selection, or onto the default style when nothing is selected. ⇧ samples only its fill or stroke colour into the active side, and ⌥ works the other way, applying the selection's appearance to the object you click.
Measure Tool
–
Drag between two points to read the distance, the offsets and the angle; ⇧ holds the line to 45° steps. The last measurement stays on screen until the next drag.
Morph
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Morph Tool
W
Click one object and then another to morph between them through a series of in-between steps. To take a further object into a morph, click inside the morph and then click the object you want added to it.
The symbolism brushes
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Symbol Sprayer Tool
⇧S
Drag to lay down instances of the symbol chosen in the Symbols panel, as a symbol set. ⌥ takes instances away again.
Symbol Shifter Tool
–
Drags the instances under the brush along with the pointer.
Symbol Scruncher Tool
–
Draws the instances under the brush together; ⌥ spreads them apart.
Symbol Sizer Tool
–
Grows the instances under the brush; ⌥ shrinks them.
Symbol Spinner Tool
–
Turns the instances under the brush to follow the drag.
Symbol Stainer Tool
–
Tints the instances under the brush towards the fill colour; ⌥ takes the tint back out.
Symbol Screener Tool
–
Fades the instances under the brush; ⌥ brings them back to full strength.
Symbol Styler Tool
–
Applies the graphic style chosen in the Graphic Styles panel to the instances under the brush; ⌥ removes it.
All eight take [ and ] for brush size and { and } for how hard the brush works. They act on the instances in the selection, or on every editable instance when nothing is selected.
The graph tools
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Column Graph Tool
J
Drag out where the graph goes, or click for a default size, then fill in its data. Values stand as upright bars side by side.
Stacked Column Graph Tool
–
The same drag, with each column's values stacked one above another.
Bar Graph Tool
–
The same drag, with the bars lying on their side.
Stacked Bar Graph Tool
–
Horizontal bars with each row's values stacked end to end.
Line Graph Tool
–
Plots the values as points joined by lines.
Area Graph Tool
–
Plots the same lines with the space beneath them filled.
Scatter Graph Tool
–
Plots pairs of values as loose points.
Pie Graph Tool
–
Draws each value as a wedge of a circle.
Radar Graph Tool
–
Plots the values on spokes radiating from a centre.
While you drag out any of them, ⌥ draws from the centre and ⇧ keeps the box square.
Boards
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Board Tool
⇧O
Draw, move and resize artboards straight on the canvas. Drag empty canvas for a new board, with ⌥ drawing from the centre and ⇧ keeping it square; drag inside a board to move it, with ⇧ holding the move to one axis; drag a corner handle with ⇧ to keep the board's proportions.
Delete removes the active board, as long as one is left.
Slices
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Slice Tool
⇧K
Drag out a rectangle that exports on its own; ⌥ draws from the centre and ⇧ keeps it square. Slice edges settle on whole pixels, so what comes out is not blurred.
Slice Selection Tool
–
Pick, move and resize slices. Delete removes the selected one and a double-click opens its options.
Moving the view
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Hand Tool
H
Drag to pan the view. Holding the space bar borrows it from any other tool for as long as you hold it.
Rotate View Tool
⇧H
Drag to turn the view about the middle of the window, with ⇧ snapping to 15°; double-click to put it upright again. Only the view turns, never the document.
Print Tiling Tool
–
Listed in the toolbar but not implemented yet; the palette marks it as coming soon.
Zoom
Tool
Shortcut
What it does
Zoom Tool
Z
Click to zoom in and ⌥-click to zoom out. Drag a rectangle over part of the artwork to fill the window with it.
